You studied for three hours the night before the test and felt completely ready. Two weeks later, you remember almost none of it. The problem wasn't how hard you studied. It was when.
What is it?
Distributing your study sessions over time produces dramatically stronger long-term memory than cramming the same material into one sitting. Hermann Ebbinghaus documented this in 1885, the same researcher who plotted the forgetting curve showing that new material decays fast at first and then levels off. A meta-analysis spanning 317 experiments confirmed that spacing reliably improves retention across virtually every type of material studied.
Spaced repetition takes this principle and turns it into a system. Apps like Anki schedule each flashcard for review right before you're predicted to forget it. Answer correctly and the interval before you see the card again gets longer. Get it wrong and it resets. The algorithm handles the scheduling so you spend your time on what actually needs attention instead of things you already know.
The Neuroscience
Every time you retrieve a memory, you trigger a fresh round of consolidation in the hippocampus. The reconstruction of the memory strengthens the neural connections involved. When you space repetitions out, each session forces a slightly effortful retrieval because some forgetting has happened since the last review. That effort is the whole mechanism. Retrieval that takes work strengthens the memory more than retrieval that feels easy, which is why re-reading your notes before an exam feels productive but rarely produces lasting retention.
Timing matters more than most people know. Research by Cepeda and colleagues found that the optimal gap between study sessions grows proportionally with how long you need to retain the material. For a test a few weeks away, spacing reviews a few days apart is close to optimal. For material you want to keep for a year, you need gaps of weeks or months. Compressing all your reviews into one week before a deadline doesn't give consolidation enough time to work.
Try it this week
Take one subject you're currently studying and spread your reviews across at least three sessions over the coming week instead of one long sitting. If you use flashcards, try Anki. A deck of 20 to 30 cards reviewed for ten minutes daily is more effective than a two-hour cram session. For anything you want to retain long-term, build in a review at one week, one month, and three months. The sessions can be short. The spacing is what does the work.
