Say It Out Loud, Picture It Clearly

Two of the most underrated memory techniques require no app, no system, and no extra time. You just have to stop being quiet.

What is it?

The production effect, named by psychologist Colin MacLeod in 2010, is the finding that reading something out loud makes it substantially more memorable than reading it silently. Across a series of experiments, participants who read words aloud consistently recalled more than participants who read the same words silently. A follow-up study confirmed that the combination of speaking and hearing yourself gives the biggest boost, beating out mouthing words, whispering, or typing.

Visualization works through a related but distinct mechanism. Mental imagery activates the same hippocampal and visuospatial systems used during actual perception and navigation. Your brain processes a vivid mental image similarly to how it processes seeing something real, which is why imagery-based techniques like the memory palace are so effective.

The Neuroscience

The production effect works through distinctiveness. When you say a word out loud, you encode additional information alongside it: the sensation of speaking, the sound of your own voice, the motor memory of the movement. At retrieval, those extra sensory traces serve as additional cues. In lists where only some items were read aloud, the spoken ones stood out against the silent ones, and that contrast drove the memory advantage. Distinctiveness is a core feature of how the hippocampus decides what to retain.

Dual coding theory, proposed by Allan Paivio in 1971, explains why combining verbal and visual information improves memory. The brain processes language and imagery through two independent but connected systems. Information encoded in both channels creates two separate retrieval routes. Paivio and Csapo found that pictures were recalled at up to twice the rate of abstract words. When you connect a concept to a vivid mental image, you double the number of ways your brain can find it later.

The two techniques stack. Saying something aloud while forming a vivid mental image of it engages verbal encoding, auditory encoding, motor encoding, and visual encoding simultaneously. Four retrieval routes instead of one, with no extra time required.

Try it this week

When reviewing flashcards or notes, read your answers out loud instead of in your head. For anything you want to remember particularly well, pause and form a concrete mental image of what it represents. The image doesn't need to be elaborate, just specific and sensory. When studying abstract concepts, translate them into something concrete before moving on. If you're learning about a brain structure, picture where it sits, what it looks like, what it does. The act of constructing that image deepens the encoding.
