You have never actually multitasked in your life. Neither has anyone else. What feels like doing two things at once is your brain rapidly toggling between them, and every single toggle costs more than you think.
What is it?
The prefrontal cortex, the region responsible for planning, decision-making, and sustained attention, operates as a single-channel processor for complex cognitive tasks. It cannot simultaneously run two demanding mental operations. What it can do is switch between them very quickly, fast enough that the process feels continuous. But the two things are never actually happening at the same time.
Each switch triggers what researchers call a switch cost: a brief but measurable period where the brain has to disengage from the current task, reactivate the rules and goals for the new one, and rebuild the mental context it just left behind. Research by Rubinstein, Meyer, and Evans found this process can cut overall productivity by up to 40 percent on complex tasks. The cost comes not just from time lost in the transition, but from the overhead of maintaining two task sets simultaneously, even when only one is actively running.
For automatic tasks like walking and talking, this bottleneck matters less because those tasks run on different neural pathways and don't heavily recruit the prefrontal cortex. For anything cognitively demanding like writing, analyzing, studying, or planning, switching is expensive.
The Neuroscience
There's an additional cost that most people don't account for: attention residue. When you switch away from a task, part of your cognitive resources stay anchored to the previous one. You're physically doing the new task, but a portion of your prefrontal bandwidth is still processing the unresolved threads of the last one. You're never fully in either place.
A 2005 study commissioned by Hewlett-Packard at King's College London tested workers' cognitive performance under three conditions: normal focused work, work while handling email and phone interruptions, and under other known cognitive impairments for comparison. The workers who multitasked with digital media showed an average IQ drop of 10 points. That's more than twice the cognitive effect associated with cannabis use. Constant interruption reduces your capacity to think clearly.
Habitual task-switching also elevates cortisol and adrenaline over time, contributing to mental fatigue and reduced working memory capacity. The brain doesn't adapt to constant switching and get better at it. Research suggests it gets worse.
Try it this week
Pick one task per day that actually matters and give it a fully protected block of time. Close every tab that isn't directly relevant. Put your phone in a different room, not just face-down on the desk. When you feel the urge to check something mid-task, wait it out. The urge usually passes within 60 to 90 seconds.
When moving between tasks, give yourself a few minutes of low-stimulation transition time before opening the next thing. Walk, get some water, breathe. This helps clear attention residue and lets the prefrontal cortex fully reset before re-engaging.
